What do ICBA, ABA, & FOTB
have in common?
Last month, I completed my term as chair of the Indiana Bankers Association. I look forward to still serving the industry as immediate past chair of IBA, but also as current chair of Friends of Traditional Banking.

At IBA's annual meeting, we were visited by Independent Community Bankers of America President and CEO Rebeca Romero Rainey, as well as American Bankers Association President and CEO Rob Nichols. Our industry is clearly strongest when united.

That's why I appreciate Friends of Traditional Banking--who judges the candidates to endorse based on how they are on the broad issues where both ICBA and ABA agree. These national associations and their PACs do great work, and I am proud that FOTB can supplement their efforts with the money bombs to a couple of key candidates we do each cycle. Together, we really do make a big difference!

Industry United Against Durbin-Marshall Credit Card Act
Leaders of banks of all sizes are united against legislation by Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS) that would require cards from banks with $100 billion or more of assets to offer merchants the choice of two unaffiliated card networks that aren't both Visa and Mastercard. Bank leaders call this a giveaway to retailers that would increase costs for consumers. Airlines point out it would jeopardize their popular credit card rewards programs.

While it was thought earlier this year that this bill was dead, both Durbin and Marshall have been pushing hard in recent days for a Senate vote on the matter.

Please join our friends at ABA and ICBA in contacting your US Senators to OPPOSE the Durbin-Marshall Credit Card Act!
NJBA's Michael Affuso Joins FOTB's Executive Committee
The president and CEO of the New Jersey Bankers Association, Michael P. Affuso, Esq., has been named to Friends of Traditional Banking's Executive Committee. Affuso has been involved with FOTB's Advisory Council since its inception 11 years ago.

Mike has overseen NJBA since July 2022, having served that association since 2008 as director of Government Relations, being promoted from VP to SVP to EVP.

Prior to his career at NJBA, Affuso served first as campaign manager and then deputy district director and general counsel for Congressman Albio Sires. Prior to his work with Congressman Sires, Affuso served as associate general counsel for the New Jersey General Assembly Majority Office in Trenton where he provided legal counsel to the Assembly Speaker and Majority Members.
Ryan Hale to Represent New Hampshire
on FOTB Advisory Council
Ryan Hale, VP/Government Relations for the New Hampshire Bankers Association, has been named to represent the Granite State on FOTB's Advisory Council. He joined NHBA in 2018 as the Government and Member Relations Manager where he assisted the VP/Government Relations in the state-level lobbying effort. Prior to that, he spent nearly 20 years working for the NH Automobile Dealers Associations, the state association representing NH’s new and used car dealerships.

Friends of Traditional Banking is governed by an Executive Committee, and receives assistance on selecting candidates to endorse and generating support for those candidates through its Advisory Council (made up of industry association execs) and its Nationwide Banker Board (made up of a bank executive from each state). Technology Travel Tips
A message from our sponsor BankOnITUSA:

As the banking industry continues to evolve, allowing business to be conducted from a smartphone, it is more important than ever that banking leaders are conscious of the cyber security risk associated with traveling. Below are practices you can implement during your and your employees’ travels.

Connections – Nothing is Free. Be very aware of what public and free connections you utilize. Public WIFI, although convenient, is just that – public.

Travel Lightly. With the increase in cloud connectivity paired with device synchronization, it is crucial to only travel with the devices you need to minimize the risk of them being virtually and physically stolen.

Friends of Traditional Banking is a non-partisan grassroots effort organized by bankers in 2012 to improve the political and regulatory environment for the traditional banking industry in the U.S. FOTB is the inverse of a PAC--instead of spreading a little bit of money to a lot of campaigns, they focus a lot of money on a couple of key campaigns.
